Types of brain cancer
More than 120 different types of tumors can form in the brain. We can classify them by cell type (the cells from which they grow), and by where they start in the brain or its surroundings. Some are malignant and can spread to other parts of the body, and others, such as meningiomas and pituitary tumors, are benign and slow-growing.
Most primary brain tumors develop from the cells that make up or support nerve cells in the brain. These are called glial cells. Gliomas form from these cells and are categorized by the type of glial cells that they grow from. For example, astrocytomas are derived from star-shaped astrocytes, and oligodendrogliomas and astrocytoma-oligoastrocytoma mixed gliomas develop from other types of glial cells.
