Another rare form of stomach cancer is gastrointestinal stromal tumors, or GISTs. These are tumors that develop in special cells found in the stomach and intestinal lining called interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs). Under a microscope, these cells look more like muscle or nerve cells. GISTs can develop anywhere in the digestive tract, but 60 percent to 70 percent of them begin in the stomach. This form of stomach cancer may be hereditary, and a gene mutation known as CDH1 raises the risk for this type of cancer.
